Southside Regional Jail Overview

Greensville County's public safety page identifies Southside Regional Jail as the jail serving Greensville County and the City of Emporia. The facility is operated by the Southside Regional Jail Authority, so it should not be treated as a sheriff-run county jail even though the Greensville County Sheriff is part of the local public safety system and serves on the authority board. People arrested by the Greensville County Sheriff's Office, Emporia Police Department, Virginia State Police, or another local agency may be transported there when a case results in local jail custody.

Southside Regional Jail holds local pretrial detainees, local sentenced inmates, eligible work-release and home electronic monitoring participants, and other accepted populations. The public-facing jail material also refers to local custody housing blocks and a Page County inmate visiting schedule, which means the Greensville County jail population is only one part of the total facility picture. A person booked locally may later be released, held for court, moved on a detainer, or transferred into Virginia Department of Corrections custody after sentencing.

The 2023 state report listed a rated capacity of 100 and FY 2023 average daily population of 141.37, so the average daily count increased in the next fiscal year.

Southside Jail Visiting Rules

The Southside Regional Jail visitation page currently includes a notice that personal visits are suspended until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while also preserving the local custody schedule and rules. Both facts matter. Do not assume the schedule is active on a given day. Call the visitation hotline at (434) 634-7106, extension 300 for the schedule or extension 305 for updated visitation information before traveling.

Local custody inmates are allowed two 15-minute visits per week when visits are operating. Visitors must be on the approved visitor list, photo ID is required, and visits are non-contact unless the visitor is an attorney, probation or parole officer, or mental health counselor. Handbags, purses, backpacks, cell phones, cameras, and other personal items must be left in the vehicle. The Shift Commander can cancel or deny a visit, and intoxicated visitors may be denied or arrested.

Southside Mail and Money

The jail's inmate policies page separates personal mail from legal mail. Personal mail is digitally delivered through tablets and goes to a Phoenix, Maryland processing address. Legal mail must be marked as legal mail and sent directly to Southside Regional Jail. The jail policy says legal mail is copied and given to the inmate in person, with the original destroyed in the inmate's presence.

Those policies are facility-specific. They should not be applied to Greensville Correctional Center, which follows VADOC rules rather than regional jail mail and commissary procedures.

Southside Jail Programs

Southside Regional Jail publishes specific work release and home electronic monitoring rules. Both require court approval before the inmate can be eligible, then jail review still applies. Work release requires a sentence under 12 months, a non-violent offense, a current employer business license, no outstanding detainers, transportation, a drug and alcohol screen, and work limited to up to 12 hours per shift. The posted cost is $18 per day, and the inmate must keep up to one week of fees on the account.

Home electronic monitoring also requires court approval and jail eligibility review. The posted cost is $10 per day, paid weekly in advance, plus a one-time $25 installation fee due with the first week. A phone with at least basic service is required. These program rules can affect whether a person appears to be in custody, on a monitored release path, or still tied to a jail sentence even while working or staying at home under restrictions.

Southside Jail Records Access

Virginia FOIA is the public-records framework for Southside Regional Jail booking records and related jail records. Code of Virginia Chapter 37 includes request procedures and law-enforcement record limits. Some jail information may be withheld or redacted because of active investigations, juvenile status, medical privacy, safety, victim or witness information, or criminal history dissemination limits.
